Microsoft released Office 2019 for Windows and Mac on 24 September. Office 2019 is (probably) the last standalone version of Office; that is, you can buy it once and install it on your computer, rather than being an annual subscription like Office 365.

Note, if will only run on Windows 10 – it will not work on Windows 7 or 8.1. It will also only be available as ‘Click-to-Run’, meaning that you will need to be connected to the Internet in order for it to install. It will not be available in an MSI format that would allow for offline installation. Note also that Office 2019 will not get feature updates, only security updates and fixes.

Office 2016 will continue to be supported until 14 October 2025.

    Thanks for this info, Chris.
I’m disappointed that you can’t install it offline, but not surprised that it may well be the last standalone version of Office.
What is your source for the info here?

The announcements were made at the Microsoft Ignite conference as reported here, here and here.

One clarification made since I posted was that there will be at least one more ‘standalone’ version of Office. The last article linked above has a good explanation of the differences between the standalone version of Office and the subscription version Office 365.
